Collaborating across Asia


Goy Architects, founded in Singapore by Goy Zhenru in 2015, is an architecture studio focused on combining vernacular craftsmanship with a modern, sustainable, construction. The studio works across Southeast Asia, with its three partners – Dessy Anggadewi, Sam Loet, and Goy Zhenru – working in Indonesia, Thailand, and Singapore respectively. Goy Architects’ distributed team facilitates an architectural practice that is rooted in local knowledge but nourished through international exchange.
For Goy, Dropbox eases the everyday challenges of working remotely. Design models and documents are all uploaded to a shared Dropbox, meaning that any changes or comments made on site, or through an individual discussion with a builder or client, are recorded on Dropbox for the other partners to see. Goy says that this enables them to be ‘in sync and up to date, even though we’re not physically present with each other.’

"A handmade ceramic tableware set made by a third-generation artisan in Chiang Mai, who interestingly also runs an after-hours udon noodle restaurant.

"This set of cement sand tiles were the first few batches of tiles that we tested for the project in Sukasantai. We tested the various shades of blues and also created a new tile pattern that was drawing inspiration from the old metal window frames in the existing villa on-site."
The factory was in Yogyakarta, and it brings back fond memories as we were able to experience first hand how the tiles were made (by hand), pressed by machine and laid out to dry before sanding & polishing."

Samples for replication
"We’ve collected two of the existing damaged tiles at the Golden Bell Mansion for detailed colouring mapping and documenting the tile design. We would then send the original tile and our tile documentation to a cement-sand tile manufacturer Solo Design in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Over in Solo design, the artisans will create colour samples of the tiles, and replicate the exact tile design. Once done, they will send over the sample piece for approval before production of the full quantities."

"It was about five years ago when we started the project, not knowing how it would turn out.
This handmade model was made by me, and it is basically a model of the farmstay. I remember it was a working model, and we would mess around with it a lot to find the final proportions and play out of the farmstay.
So this has special meaning to me because it is one of the first projects. It has just been completed, and the project has inspired a lot of people in the region, and it helps the community and local environment as well."

We created three conceptual paintings and wanted to translate them onto patterns of the ceramic tiles for an interior project. We met with Philip in Bali and explained our concepts to him and his group of artisans. Some testing was made, and the tiles were sent to Singapore once completed."
